Bushcraft FAQs

  • Bushcraft camping is all about learning the skills required to live in the natural environment using minimal equipment. Basic bushcraft skills include things like shelter building, firecraft, tool-making, foraging, hunting, fishing, navigation, and collecting water.

We believe everyone should learn about bushcraft, even if you have no plans to live in the wilderness just yet! But, we can all gain something from developing a better understanding of the natural environment, and learning to work with it to meet our basic needs in a sustainable and respectful way. Picking up a few essential bushcraft skills can change the way you think about the world around you – and your life.

Bushcraft isn’t about having expensive tools or high-tech gadgets; it is about using your knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills to use what you have to meet your basic needs. When you shift into this mindset, you realise that you don’t need much to get by, but you do need to take care of what you have – whether that’s your bushcraft tools, each other or the natural environment.

  • Bushcraft and wilderness survival do have a lot in common, but there are some key differences between these two camps of outdoor activities.

    Wilderness Survival
When you learn wilderness survival skills, your goal is to be prepared for and stay alive in emergency situations. It’s about meeting your immediate needs (food, water, shelter, warmth) with limited resources or in extreme conditions.

    Bushcraft
Bushcraft isn’t about surviving a natural disaster or emergency scenario (although the knowledge and skills would certainly be useful in those situations). Instead, bushcraft is about learning the skills required to live in nature, focusing on ecological knowledge and sustainable practices.

  • A bushcraft tool can be just about anything – if it serves a purpose (or even better, multiple purposes) on your bushcraft adventures, then you can call it a bushcraft tool.
